Binge Watch This List of Top Filipino Movies of the 2000s

As a pinoy who lives in the states, it’s hard for me to keep up with the latest movies from home. Once in a while, they’ll show in a theater near me here in the Washington, DC area, but I’m not exposed to every good/bad Filipino movie that’s made. So, I did a little research and compiled this list of popular Filipino movies of the last few years. (Feel free to click on my affiliate links to buy them.) Get some popcorn and get ready to binge-watch! In no particular order:

The Hows of Us

This is currently the big bopper of all Filipino movies, grossing over
₱800 million worldwide! That’s about $16 million usd! It is still currently in theaters as of this writing, so only the soundtrack is selling right now. I’ll update this when the movie is finally on sale.

According to imdb, this movie is “is a story of a young couple dreaming of growing old together, even as they deal with the struggles of being in a long-term relationship.”

The movie stars Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo.

A Second Chance

This 2015 movie was is one of the top grossing Filipino movies of all time! It made about ₱446 million pesos or around $8 million usd. That’s a lot of shrimp chips right there.

The movie stars John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo. From the imdb description, this movie is about “a couple with a tumultuous romantic past [finding] married life to be just as difficult.” Bea is my bae, so I’m for any film she’s in.

Heneral Luna

Also in 2015, the movie Heneral Luna was released. I saw this in America and I remember how excited I was to see it. I love learning about big historical events, and few are as big some of the Philippines’ best bouts of resistance. From imdb: “Set during the Philippine-American war, Heneral Luna follows the life of one of Philippine History’s most brilliant soldier, General Antonio Luna, as he tries to lead his countrymen against colonial masters new and old, and to rise above their own raging disputes to fulfill the promise of the Philippine Revolution.”

The movie grossed ₱208 million, about $4 million usd.

I couldn’t find this being sold anywhere, but I will update this post soon as I find it.

Felix Manalo

2015 must’ve been a banner year in Filipino cinema, as another film released in that year is one of the top grossing films of all time. With a decidedly religious flair, “Felix Ysagun Manalo is a sprawling historical epic that traces the origin of Iglesia Ni Cristo (The Church of Christ) which is established in the Philippines from its humble beginnings in 1914 through the present day” (imdb).

The movie grossed ₱226 million, about $4.5 million usd.

I couldn’t find this being sold anywhere, but I will update this post soon as I find it.

Starting Over Again

Sweetheart actress Toni Gonzaga is paired with freakishly handsome Piolo Pascual, so you know this movie was going to do well in the box office. In fact, this movie took in ₱410 million, about $8 million usd! Ay nako!

The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin

A movie with Vice Ganda? It’ll probably be pretty popular. Her star is as bright as any!

“Praybeyt Benjamin is a 2011 Filipino action spoof comedy film starring Eddie Garcia, Nikki Valdez, Vice Ganda, Vandolph Quizon, Derek Ramsey and Jimmy Santos. It was written and directed by Wenn V. Deramas.”

Sisterakas

Vice Ganda is no slouch in the box office. Here’s another movie starring the starlet that held a spot in the top grossing movie lists.

From imbd: “Bernice and Detty are half siblings whose bitter rivalry dates back to when they were kids. When their father passed away, things went downhill from there which led to the two siblings never speaking to each other again, but that all changes when Detty applies to be Bernice’s assistant not knowing that Bernice is her sister.”

Bride for Rent

Kim Chiu is my future wife, she just doesn’t know it yet. Which is a good setup for the sequel to this movie, released in 2014 and pulling in a whopping ₱327 million!

I saw this in the theaters and swooned. It’s about “a young man trying to get at his inheritance hires a woman to play his bride. But though it’s just supposed to be an act, things get unexpectedly real between them” (imdb).

No Other Woman

“Kiss me and don’t you dare fall in love with me.” Whew! What a line! Anne Curtis has to be my favorite evil mistress. Moviegoers agree with me to the tune of ₱278 million!

I’ve seen this movie quite a few times and I highly recommend it. Do I need to go over the plot when there’s a movie with Anne Curtis, Derek Ramsay and Cristine Reyes in it?

The Mistress

It’s not going to go the way you think! Watch it to know what I’m talking about. My favorite part is the torso twisting restaurant confrontation scene.

There’s a reason why this movie is one of the chart toppers. Bea and John Lloyd Cruz do a phenomenal job in this movie. And Hilda Koronel was no joke.

She’s Dating The Gangster

Are Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla dating? I have no idea. But they probably should be.

“Athena Dizon plays a trick on campus heartthrob and bad boy, gangster, Kenji de los Reyes. Setting up an arrangement to pretend as lovers-to make his ex jealous-they found themselves falling to each other yet falling apart” (imdb).

This Guy’s In Love With U Mare!

This movie “is about an unlikely love triangle. When Lester (Vice Ganda) catches his boyfriend Mike (Luis Manzano) proposing marriage to Gemma (Toni Gonzaga), it seems as if Lester’s whole world is crashing down. Lester devises what he thinks is a brilliant plan to keep Gemma away from Mike by getting her to fall in love with him instead” (imdb).

Enteng ng Ina Mo

This movie is an instant classic, set in a fantastic version of the world around us. It won second best picture in the Metro Manila Film Festival in 2011 and ultimately raked in ₱238 million!

You Changed My Life

I don’t know how John Lloyd gets all the girls but he does. He stars opposite Sarah Geronimo in this film, a proverbial 600 lbs gorilla that pulled in ₱225 million in 2009!

From imdb: “It’s been 6 months since Laida Magtalas (Sarah Geronimo) won the heart of her prince charming Miggy Montenegro (John Lloyd Cruz) and her life has been nothing but a bed of roses: she got promoted, Flippage is now in the same building where Miggy works and best of all, her hair looks better than ever. As far as Laida is concerned, nothing can wreck her perfect little world. Miggy feels like he’s on top of the world as well. He’s okay with his family situation, for the first time, he’s in a meaningful relationship and is determined to prove to everyone that he is indeed still a work in progress, but well on his way to becoming the new and improved, Miggy! But unforseen events puts a damper on Miggy and Laida’s seemingly blissful lives when Miggy gets promoted and is assigned to Laguna, while Laida is offered a job in Canada.”

It Takes a Man and a Woman

Since the chemistry was so good in 2009, they hooked up again in 2013 in this RomCom that is in the top 5 highest grossing Filipino movies of all time. Of all time! About ₱375 million.

If it’s good enough for that many lovers of Filipino movies, it’s good enough for me and for this list!
